Have you ever been so easily irritated at teeny little things, snapped at people, then felt immediately guilty?

Has it been going on for a while, and you’ve been writing yourself off as just the bad guy at work or at home?

What if you’re not really mean?
What if you’re just… tired?

If you’ve ever felt severe exhaustion, dissociation from your job, reduced effectiveness at work… chances are, you’re experiencing burnout.

Burnout, while not a medical condition, is defined as an occupational phenomenon and syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.

Burnout is a central theme in a villain origin story Kontrabida Academy, starring Barbie Forteza as Gigi, a restaurant assistant manager whose life is about to be turned upside down.

Gigi is the token responsible Filipina adult. Breadwinner of the family, an excellent coworker and leader, and supportive girlfriend—she is used to everybody in her life depending on her.

Things come to a head after her mother irresponsibly loses the hard-earned money Gigi gave her, her toxic boss demotes her after their restaurant’s manpower was drastically reduced, and she discovers her boyfriend has been cheating on her.

A weary Gigi turns on a magical TV she won in a raffle, and her villain origin story begins.

Translation: “That’s a salary deduction, alright!”

How many of us are slowly burning out on the pressures of life brought about by financial concerns, work stress and family issues?

We can be ticking time bombs without even knowing it.

Translation: “What you’re going through in work, in family, in your love life...”

When we start to burn out, it is only a matter of time until:

We lash out at people, we’re angry all the time, we feel joyless and listless; so much so that no amount of retail therapy, nor lengthy vacations taken, can provide real rest.

Translation: “You’re like a time bomb.”

You get your feet wet at the beach, sip on coconuts from a straw, and out of the blue a sick feeling in the pit of your stomach that you are coming back to your work and your life in only a matter of time.
Burnout feels like a constant feeling of despair over your situation.

Unfortunately, when you’re tired enough, you’re a villain waiting to happen.

But the Bible brings us good news!

Jesus had something to say about real rest.
Matthew 11:29 The Message
(v. 29) Walk with me and work with me - watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.

Burnout can turn us into people we couldn’t recognize.
Again, maybe you aren’t mean, you’re just tired.
